I had thoughts about my future, thoughts about life, what my destiny
would be, and how I could change my way of living. I wanted to look
for new opportunities and discover new horizons. My father worked in
something related to construction and the salary is very low. My mother is
a housewife and works in neighbors' houses cleaning and washing clothes.
There were no more job opportunities; they had few jobs to pick from. Their
money was not enough to cover the expenses of the house and my brothers'
studies, so I decided to leave my country to go to the United States. I entered
Mexico as an undocumented person and had to stay away from the police.
People label us "fugitives”. I met many people of different backgrounds from
Central and South America; we created a very strong connection between
us. We started talking about the goals of what we would do when we arrived
at our destination. We knew that the goals we had for each other were like a bond that united us to each other. Together we gave each other the motivation to keep going.
After so many persecutions by the state police and immigration, we arrived in San Luis Potosí where we were transported with 400 people inside a trailer. It was very scary to see many people inside, women and children. Thetrip lasted 8 hours. The first 3 hours were silent, but as time progressed, it got hotter and hotter. Shortly after we had been traveling for 6 hours and the air began to reduce in the trailer, many people could not stand the pressure and began to scream and faint and chaos formed. It was very terrifying to be on the edge of death. The only thing left to do was ask God for help to be able to have the strength to not lose calm. There was a person in charge of all people and he threatened everyone so they could calm down. After those words, a dark silence of crying and regret took hold. Two more hours of profound silence passed. The trip lengthened and suddenly we began to notice that the trailer slowed down and stopped.
Many people were happy and said thank you without knowing that the happiness would only last a few minutes. The trailer driver opened the door and said, "I was just informed that there will be no police checks or inspections, we will have to continue for another 8 hours.” Many people looked scared, tired and exhausted not knowing what would happen. The only thing that kept us going were the dreams, the goals, and all the purposes we wanted to fulfill. I heard a voice say, “10 minutes left" to arrive at the winery. I don't know what happened to me, it was like in the blink of an eye, during that time it was as if I had been dead without knowing anything about what had happened. I began
to imagine many things: when could I open my eyes again? Maybe I was
already dead due to lack of oxygen or the strong heat. Of course, the only
thing I know is that God has other plans for me, that helped me reflect on
my journey. If I had died, the only thing I would take with me would be the memories and the good times I lived. There is no point in struggling without enjoying what you are doing and fighting for those you love. Don’t hold a grudge against them for the harm they do to you, because in the face of
death everything remains and you would not want to carry the resentment
and hatred with you anymore.
