Billy

Lynn Classical High School, Lynn, Massachusetts

I arrived in the United States with hope and dreams just like many oth-
ers before me. The first months were difficult while struggling to adapt to a new culture, new language and new way of life. The language barrier was particularly difficult for me since communication was essential for daily activities. However, with determination and perseverance, I enrolled
in English classes and little by little, I began to improve my language skills.
One aspect of the United States that caught my attention was diversity, from
the different cultures and traditions, to the mixture of people from different
backgrounds; the country really celebrates diversity. This diversity not only enriched my experience but also made me see the beauty of a multicultural world. I quickly realized that diversity is what makes the United States unique and what makes it such a vibrant and inclusive society. Being here, I am also able to have the opportunity to pursue my dreams. I was able to enroll in a renowned university and fulfill my aspiration to obtain a higher education, something that isn’t easy in my home country.

One of the initial changes I encountered in my new life in the United States
was navigating the cultural differences that exist. From my culture to those around me with different ones... we all exist together. It is crucial to approach these differences with an open mind and willingness to learn and adapt. In the United States, many things may differ from what you or I am accustomed to. Americans are generally known for their directness, assertiveness, and individualism. In contrast with my home country, communication may be more indirect and emphasize collective values of others as a group. Regardless of where we come from, we should all be aware that communication styles are different and to act accordingly and avoid misunderstanding. I have also learned that my customs and social norms are different from those of the people I have met in America. These vary across different culture groups within the United States. I believe it is important to be respectful and sensitive to the different examples of greetings, gestures, and personal boundaries. By observing and learning from others, I can navigate these cultural nuances.

Living here has been a transformative experience for me defined by determination, resilience and the pursuit of a better future. The decision to leave behind the familiar and embrace the unfamiliar was not without its
challenges but it has instilled in me a deep sense of appreciation for the
opportunities and freedoms this country offers to me as an immigrant. I am
grateful for the chance to contribute to American society, to build a fulfilling
life, and to be part of the vibrant tapestry of America's immigrant story. I
hope that my journey serves as a testament to the strength and diversity of
the United States.
